Investigating the Salem Witch Trials: August 23, 2016

Focus: What did the Puritans fear, and what did they do to feel safe?

1. Warming up with an impromptu performance of the Bridget Bishop trial in teams of 3: Judge, Bridget, and court clerk (the person who takes notes and POSTS THEM ON TODAY'S CLASS BLOG)
  • If you're Judge Hawthorne, what do you notice about the kinds of questions you're asking?
  • If you're Bridget Bishop, what do you notice about your responses?
  • Revisit yesterday's target. How do these court transcripts help you understand something new or support something you already discovered?

2. Solving the Salem witch trials:

a. Keeping the problem in mind, investigate the Salem witch trials individually using this overview and the other side of the target. (20 minutes) We'll take a look at a sample, too.

b. As a group, work towards a collaborative understanding of the Salem witch trials by sharing what you found at the core of your target.

***BRAIN BREAK***Make Google folders***Form groups of 3 or 4 with all members sharing a similar phobia (spiders, snakes, heights, etc).

c. In small groups, work towards solving the problem by developing thoughtful responses to the three big questions posed on the overview.

3. Wrapping up by posting one question about the Salem witch trials lurking in your brain

HW:

1. Before class tomorrow, please finish researching the Salem witch trials and filling in the target (all three circles).

2. If you have not yet completed the survey, please do so as soon as you can (this Friday at the latest).

I noticed that they are one sided, the judge is accusing without giving her an opinion. Bridgette was saying she is innocent to everything later got very upset. The judges are the same and accuse you of everything without giving an opinion or chance to speak.

Judge Hawthorne was asking a lot of what Bridget Bishop thought about the accusations. He was asking her opinion rather then accusing her the whole time. The whole trial seems to deal with moral law rather than actual laws.

Bridget Bishop claims that she is innocent over and over. Seems like a child who doesn't really know whats going on. Doesn't know how to deal with the accusations.

There is no physical evidence because the trial is dealing with spirits. They have to decide if Bishop is guilty based on accounts of other people.

  4. 1. He keeps asking the same question in different ways.
    2. She keeps saying I'm not a witch, I don't know what you're talking about.
    3. When they put the "witch" on trial she keeps denying she is a witch.

  5. Judge asks a lot of why questions, when he should be asking did you questions.
Bishop keeps denying what they are accusing her of and then she blames other people. They seem to have evidence that she has done witchcraft (cut in the cloth) but she keeps denying it.

  6. Judge Hawthorne- I asked her about crimes she was accused for like witch craft and murder.

Bridget Bishop- I said no to every thing I was asked saying that I am innocent

Even though a Person may be innocent people will lie and falsely accuse someone of witch craft although they never did it.

  7. Bishop is always saying that she is innocent and she isn't a witch. John Harthon is constantly accusing Bishop of being a witch and isn't listing to Bishop that well. This helps us clarify things and helps us realize the type of questions being asked and the repetition of Bishop's answers.

  8. He keeps trying to get the truth out of her by telling her she is guilty. Bish noticed that she just keep saying no. Everyone has only one view and won't ever admit to the truth.

Judge Hawthorne- keeps asking questions to make Bridget Bishop to look guilty.

Bridget Bishop - Keeps saying that she is innocent.

They all do not really want the truth they just want what they believe.

The Judge keeps asking if she is a witch and is very repetitive.
    Bishop-Garret
Bishop keeps denying it and can't really convince anyway that she isn't a witch so she keeps denying that she is a witch.

Mr. H. keeps asking the same questions and Bishop keeps giving the same answer, that she is innocent. It seems that they have gotten nowhere from this examination.

Judge Harthon - repeats the same question/s over and over again

Bridget Bishop - She keeps repeating the same denial

Neither side can prove anything or come up with any new argument, simply repeats the same idea a bunch of times

The judge kept stating statements and never really changed the question is was always the same. Bridget always gave the same answers and was very repetitive claiming that she never did anything that has to do with the devil.

    1. The judge is asking questions as if he already knows the answer. They are not necessarily even questions but he is imposing the answer.

    2. She is very repetitive in her answers and keeps saying that she is innocent. She does not give any evidence that she is or isn't a witch.

    3. This relates to what we have been talking about in class because they have no way of accurately verifying if the girls are witches or not and they just have to assume that they all are.

  15. Andie, Kenny, and Allie.
Mr. Harthon- he kept asking her to tell the truth and was being very repetitive in his questions.
Bishop- She kept denying it but she has no way to prove that she wasn't/

    1. Harthon keeps asking Bishop the same question: whether or not she's a witch. He doesn't actually investigate Bishop's case - as though he's already decided Bishop was to die.
    2. Bishop repeatedly tells the judge that she's innocent. Literally in every sentence she says she says she is innocent and doesn't know what he's talking about. Her consistent denial is suspicious.

  17. Bridget always says she's innocent after Mr. Harthon accuses her and comes up with reason of her being a witch.

Mr. Harthon seems to just be asking mrs. bishop the same questions, it feels like he is trying to catch him in a lie.
Mrs. Bishop just keeps saying that she is innocent over and over again.

  19. Mr. Harthorn (Nash)- always starts his questions the same way

Bishop (Lauren)-kept answers short, repeatedly said she was innocent
